Sonya Joy
Photographer · Writer · Life Traveler
Sonya Joy is a freelance writer and photographer, with decades of experience in a multitude of platforms and genres, as well as a leader of women’s creativity and self-development groups.
She has a traditional background in education, psychology, philosophy, and sociology. Her less mainstream studies include the history of shamanic cultures and practices, plant medicine and lore, animal therapies, and she currently holds a third degree blackbelt in Taekwondo and swords, along with two national titles in competition sparring.
Sonya has a passion for story telling as a means of expanding community consciousness, and engaging folks in heightening their own self-awareness and meeting their own deeply personal—but often untapped—desires. Her goal is to facilitate stepping outside our normative cultural scripts, to invest in our own imagination and creativity, with a view to discovering what truly makes one happy.
Through her own adventures across the globe, Sonya has developed an uncanny knack for uncovering nuanced human experiences, and relating them through her writing, photography, and workshops.
“Sonya is a skilled craftswoman and she has creative instincts that delight those who see and read her work. Her art offers a generous invitation to the viewer, to the reader, to enter the landscape of her work and to explore the depths of presence there. Her work reaches out to us and we find our own interior landscape within the words and images offered.”
